Dr. Wilford W. Spradlin, professor emeritus of the University of Virginia, was born in southwest VA and raised on a farm. He received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from the University of Virginia. Dr. Spradlin interned at the Royal Victoria Hospital of McGill University and completed his residency training at Duke University where he later became a member of the faculty.
In 1967, Dr. Spradlin was appointed Chair of the West Virginia University Department of Psychiatry. While at West Virginia University, he started a psychiatry residency program and initiated a conjoint internal medicine-psychiatry residency program, which became a national model.
In 1978, Dr. Spradlin accepted the position of Chair at the University of Virginia Department of Psychiatry. During his tenure, he established a psychiatry residency program in the Roanoke/Salem area and was Director of Western State Hospital.
At his retirement in 1997, Dr. Spradlin was awarded the W.W. Spradlin Chair of Psychiatric Medicine and the title of Professor Emeritus.
While retired, Dr. Spradlin continues to teach and supervise residents. His scientific publications include Human Biosociology and The Search for Certainty, by Springer-Verlag. He continues to pursue his interest in the bio-psycho-social foundations of human behavior with emphasis on the psychological, philosophical and religious aspects of reverential phenomena and has begun publishing works of fiction that explore human behavior through various reverential formats.
